Even though Colonia is a popular getaway for both Argentinians and international travelers we still enjoyed a day in the picturesque town where we strolled around low houses and abandoned squares, where the time has stopped centuries ago, and we did not have at all feeling we were in a UNESCO-listed city (from 1995) which is every day flooded by visitors arriving on ferries.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
One of the oldest towns in Uruguay has a pretty complicated past we would have never guessed when walking the quiet streets lined with pastel-colored houses with colorful doors and shutters.
The reason for the unstable past is that Colonia has a strategic location on the shore of Rio de la Plata, and it has borders with Argentina and Brazil, the two largest countries on the continent.
Colonia del Sacramento was officially founded in 1680 by Portuguese, but since then the city was several times took over by Spaniards, British, Portuguese again or even Brazilians.
Sometimes the rule of one nation took only five or ten years, so you can imagine that people living in the area went through very difficult times, on the other hand, thanks to it Colonia has a rich history, beautiful architecture and interesting culture.
The town got its independence in 1828 when it was declared that Colonia belongs to Uruguay, a newly developed state.

We are pretty sure you will find your favorite place in the city, a no-name abandoned street or a lovely small square shaded by trees which is not in any guide book or travel blog, so walk with your eyes wide open.
The Old Town Gate
Don Manuel Lobo, a governor of Rio de Janeiro, is responsible for building Puerta de la Ciudadela alias The Old Town Gate which once used to defend the city from intrusion.
Nowadays it is an impressive entrance to the historical center used mainly by tourists.
Plaza de Armas
Plaza de Armas is Colonia's main square (no surprise if you are traveling in South America for a while now), and it is the true heart of the historical center.
You will also find here the oldest church in Uruguay Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento also known as Church Matriz.
The square is really beautiful, and it is worth to spend here some time as you can enjoy a quiet couple of minutes in the shade.
From time to time you can find here stalls with handicrafts.
Cobblestone Streets and Colonial Houses
It is easy to fall in love with Colonia del Sacramento, especially if you are an avid photographer or a person with an eye for detail, even better if you can appreciate it.
Streets of Colonia hide many gems, and even if you think that after a couple of hours walking in the city you've seen it all, keep on exploring.
Street of Sighs
One of the most picturesque streets in Colonia which is worth mentioning separately is Calle de Los Suspiros alias Street of Sighs.
The street is very iconic, and you can find it on almost every postcard from the city because it is one of the most original streets dating back to the 17th century which is lined with houses from the colonial period.
There are many stories about how the street got its name, but one of the most probable and believable ones says, that this street was the first place where sailors went after a long time on the sea, and women were awaiting them here.
Museums
For its size, Colonia has quite many museums in the historic district.
The museums are not somehow large, so you can choose several of them, and walk inside when nearby. The ticket is inexpensive, and you can even buy a master ticket in Museo Municipal which grants you access to the other seven museums.
The most popular museums show exhibitions focusing on Colonia's past, so you can find here either Spanish Museum or Portuguese Museum, but there is also a museum focusing on the indigenous culture or Paleontological Museum introducing what had been found in the area.
Marina
When we were aimlessly wandering the cobblestone streets, one lane took us to the shore of the river, where we spent some time watching yachts and people fishing.
There is a seafood restaurant nearby where you can be sure everything that is served was a while ago swimming in the water.
Just the fish, not the sides.
Beach
Colonia del Sacramento lies on the shore of a huge river Rio de la Plata which flows to the Atlantic Ocean, and if you are looking for an activity to do in the town when you are done with sightseeing, head to the sandy beach, where you can sunbathe, swim or have a picnic.
There are several beaches, as we were short on time we walked to the nearest one, but were pleasantly surprised how clean and well-kept the beach was.
San Francisco Convent
It is not possible to walk around the center and not to notice ruins of San Francisco Convent.
Not only the lighthouse was built over these ruins, but every now and then you will come across old and half-destroyed walls still standing in Colonia.
San Francisco Convent was burnt down in the 1700s, but the remains are still visible here.
El Faro Lighthouse
One of the highlights possible to see in Colonia is a white lighthouse El Faro which you can see shortly after entering the historical part.
The base of the lighthouse was built in the 19th century over the old ruins, which looks a bit odd, but most importantly, the structure served its purpose which was guiding ships safely to the port at night.
For great views, you can climb narrow steps (there are more than 100 steps) inside the lighthouse to the viewing platform.
This activity costs $1 which is not much for what you get.
Wineries
South America and wine. Those two are pretty good together. The region around Colonia is famous for great wine.
Although you can order a glass paired with your food in a restaurant, in case you want to know more and also taste more, there is a possibility to take a Colonia Wine Experience Tour.
Galleries
Colonia is the kind of city where galleries are doing well. It is caused by the casual vibe and relaxed travelers who are willing to spend money on handicrafts, paintings, clothes or hand made handbags.
If shopping is your hobby, walk around the center, sooner or later you will stumble across something you won't be able to leave the city without.
Drink Mate
Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil have a strong mate culture, and it is almost impossible to travel around those countries and not to try the national drink.
Colonia del Sacramento has a large number of pretty bars and coffee shops, usually with a pleasant sitting area outside, where you can drink mate or terere (the cold version) and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
Train Station
In case you are arriving in Colonia or leaving the city by ferry, on the way from the historical city to ferry terminal you will walk around the old train station and abandoned railway which ends in a nicely cut lawn.
Although it is probably not a notable sight according to the guidebooks, we really liked it and found the building very photogenic.

Colonia del Sacramento does not have to be only a one-day trip from Buenos Aires.
The city is famous for its authentic atmosphere, cobblestone streets and fancy bars and restaurants, you can best enjoy in the evening, when the place slows down.

HOW TO GET TO COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO FROM BUENOS AIRES
Most of the visitors coming to Colonial del Sacramento usually arrive from Buenos Aires, and it does not matter if it is only for a day, a couple of nights, or if the city is only the first stop on a multi-day vacation in Uruguay.
We decided that Colonia will be the only place we want to see in Uruguay because we were not in a mood to lie on the beach, and also at that time our budget for South America was slowly drying up.
Fortunately, getting to Colonia del Sacramento from Buenos Aires is very easy, and it does not take long.
Here's our guide on how to get from the capital of Argentina to the most beautiful colonial town in Uruguay.
The first step, to get from Buenos Aires to Colonia is to buy a ferry ticket because generally the only and the most economic way how to travel between these two places is by ferry as they lie just across the river from each other.
It is always better to reserve your ticket in advance (we did it only one day before).
Not only it is necessary to do so, but it is also crucial in case you are visiting Colonia on a one-day trip. At the moment three ferry companies are operating on this route, and it is only up to you which one you will choose.
All of them offer a similar schedule and prices.
Those companies are Buquebus, Seacat, and Colonia Express.
You can book a Colonia Ferry Ticket in advance.
Prices are different depending on the time of the day, season, and it also matters whether you are buying one-way or roundtrip ticket.
In case you are traveling in a car, the ticket is a bit pricier only if you travel in a rental car, make sure your rental company allows you to take the car abroad.
We were able to walk from Buenos Aires' city center to ferry terminal, but there is also a possibility to travel by taxi, bus or metro.
It is wise to be at the terminal at least one hour before departure, do not forget that this is not a regular trip, but you will be crossing borders, which means it takes time to walk across the customs and immigration.
Information in the terminal is easy to follow, so walk through all necessary steps until you will get to the waiting area where you must stay for a while before boarding. Here or onboard it is possible to buy snacks, and you will also find tax free zone on the ship, in case you want to do some shopping.
Once on board, take a seat (you can sit everywhere a seat is available), and enjoy an approximately one-hour long ride.
When you get to Uruguay, disembark, again go through customs and immigration, and leave the terminal.
The city center of Colonia, your today's destination is only ten minutes walk from here.

HOW TO GET TO COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO FROM OTHER URUGUAY'S DESTINATIONS
Uruguay is a small country, and in case you plan on moving around and visit more destinations within the country, the best way how to get around is by bus.
From Colonia del Sacramento you will easily get to the capital city of Uruguay Montevideo, but also other popular beach destinations such as Punta del Este or points of interest located inland.
It is always better to buy bus tickets at least one day in advance, especially when traveling during the high season, to make sure there will be a seat available on your travel dates.
When approaching the bus station, do not pay attention to taxi drivers who like to tell unsuspecting travelers that the bus is sold out or there is none that day, only to secure business for themselves.
Ferry also goes from Montevideo to Colonia, if you prefer traveling this way.

HOW MANY DAYS TO SPEND IN COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
It is always tricky to advise someone how many days to spend in a destination because everyone has a different pace and travel style, but we'll try.
Honestly, although we found Colonia's city center absolutely wonderful, we think several hours, five to six, is perfectly enough to explore the best things and most interesting sights the place has to offer.
We were super excited to find out we can take the morning ferry from Buenos Aires and be back in the afternoon without the necessity to look for yet another accommodation and again pack all our stuff.
Generally, plan one day to spend in Colonia del Sacramento.
During this period we were able to walk the historical center, discover hidden cobblestone alleyways, sunbathe on the sandy beach on the shore of Rio de la Plata, buy souvenirs, drink mate and do grocery shopping.
We are for sure not saying you should not stay in Colonia overnight, in case you have time to do so.
The center is pretty busy during the day as it is heavily visited by travelers, and we think it will for sure have a much calmer and peaceful atmosphere in the evening, and you will also have time to find the best restaurant for dining.
HOW TO GET AROUND COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
The historic city center, which is basically the reason why people travel to Colonia del Sacramento, is compact and easy to explore on foot.
Even when you arrive from Buenos Aires by ferry, and you have only a couple of hours to explore the city, there is no need to use public transport or take a taxi, because you will reach the center within ten to fifteen minutes walking.
Also, the path between the ferry terminal and the city center is lovely, as you will pass around an old train station, and it would have been a shame to miss it out.
In case walking is not your favorite activity, there is also a possibility to rent either bike, golf carts or scooters, but as we said, we do not think it is necessary at all unless you only want to spice up your travels and see the city differently, or unless you plan on visiting Colonia's wider surroundings.
Another way how to enjoy the day in the city is by cruising the river along the shore, but we recommend it only to those of you, who had decided to spend in Colonia more than one day.
WHEN TO VISIT COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
The best time to visit the city is between December and February.
This period sees the highest temperatures, and although sometimes it can be way too hot, it is much better than to experience winter lower temperatures and moody weather.
During this time it can rain, but this phenomenon should not affect your holiday at all.
Colonia del Sacramento is a popular getaway and holidaymakers destination, so the only downside of visiting the city in the summer is that prices rise, and the small historical center can be crowded at times, especially in the morning when ships from Buenos Aires arrive.
If you go after quieter times and reasonable weather, it is not a bad idea to visit Colonia del Sacramento in shoulder months such as November, March or April.
June to August is the slow season for tourism because temperatures drop, and days can be gray, on the other hand, it rarely rains and this period can be the best option for travelers on a budget.
What to pack for visiting Colonia del Sacramento
Well, it pretty much depends on what season you will be in Uruguay, but for summer season you should not arrive in the city without a daypack, durable water bottle, sneakers for Him & for Her (to walk comfortably the cobblestone streets), umbrella, and it is also a good idea to cool down in Rio de la Plata, so having a swimsuit ready is a must.
In winter, remember to pack a fleece jacket for Him & for Her and comfortable jeans for Him & for Her as well.
SAFETY IN COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
For us, visiting Colonia del Sacramento was like entering an entirely different world, at least when it came to safety and our overall feeling.
Although Uruguay is the part of Latin America and only 50 kilometers away from Buenos Aires, the UNESCO-listed city is a laidback, small touristy place with a pleasant vibe, and we did not have the slightest reason to feel uncomfortable or be worried about our valuables.
As usual, use your common sense, especially after dark, but as we were visiting Colonia during the high season, we never entered a completely abandoned or dodgy looking alleyway. Also read our article about safety in South America for more information.
It is always better to leave extra cash, credit cards or electronics in your hotel room, but most of us always walk around with a camera or phone, and this time we were happy, after almost eight months of traveling, to take a break from being constantly on guard, and enjoyed absolutely pleasant day in the city, focusing only on sightseeing.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING COLONIA DEL SACRAMENTO
Most of the travelers we met arrive in Colonia del Sacramento from Argentina, namely from Buenos Aires, and if this is also your case, we've put together a short list of things you should know before visiting the city.
First, when arriving from Argentina, it is good to know that almost every single shop in Colonia accepts Argentina Peso, so in case you are visiting Uruguay only on a one-day trip, you do not have to exchange money at all.
Of course, we are not saying the rate is somehow favorable, but as we only wanted to buy a snack, drink and a cheap souvenir, we knew it is still better and painless to pay with Argentina Peso.
In case Colonia del Sacramento is your first destination in Uruguay, and you plan on keep exploring the country more thoroughly, exchanging money or withdrawing Uruguay Pesos is a no brainer.
You will find several banks, ATMs and exchange offices on the main shopping street in Colonia.
There is no need to obtain visas for visiting Uruguay for most of the nationalities in advance, that's why visiting Colonia del Sacramento is a popular one day trip from Buenos Aires.
Not only the city is an interesting destination, but many travelers also take advantage of getting yet another stamp in the passport, see a new country in the easiest way possible, and also many long-term travelers or expats living in Argentina often take a day-trip to Colonia only to renew their visa.
Same as in most of the countries in South America, the official language in Uruguay is Spanish.
Even though Colonia del Sacramento is a well-known tourist destination, it is still mostly visited by travelers residing in South America, therefore English is not widely spoken, especially in shops and cheaper hotels.
It is good to know that shopping and prices, in general, are much more expensive in Uruguay than in Argentina and overall than in most of the countries in South America, so stock up yourself before arriving in Colonia del Sacramento.
